I'Ve Heard About DivX - What Is DivX?DivX is a video compression technology which maintains very high quality replay quality while enabling videos to be created and played conveniently and quickly. It is an efficient, MPEG-4 codec with high speed and efficiency which can be played on a wide variety of DVD players and on Windows media Player. You need to install the DivX codec before you can play DivX videos on your computer. It is popular due to its compression ratio being very suitable for movie downloads online. It reduces movie file sizes to 10% of original and when combined with MP3 audio, gives high quality videos with original image quality. Films can be viewed on computer using media player. AC3 audio may be required for surround sound systems. To use it, you need to install the DivX codec which allows you to compress and de-compress videos in the DivX format. Obviously the size of the file depends on the length of the movie, and also on the bitrate used during encoding of the movie. However, a DivX movie should be around 600 – 700MB, though a long movie will require more space.
Transfer time is specific to the transfer speed, but here are some approximates. Connection Speed 56 KB/s - this is a slow dial up land modem which will have a transfer speed of 7 KB/s and will take over 24 hours to download a movie. For this reason Broadband is essential for downloading movie files. Some other times are:
1 MB/s connection: about 3 hours 2 MB/s conestion: about 45 mins 10 MB/s connection: about 12 minutes.
In general movie downloads may take a bit longer than the above, but some fast sources can reach these times. One such source with a fast movie download time is included elsewhere on this site. It is obvious from these download times, however, that you must have a fast broadband or cable connection to enable you to feasibly download movies.
