Download Online Music
If you want to download online music, you can do so in a number of formats, among them MP3, WAV, AAC required for iTunes, psp for some Sony systems, RA, and others. The most common are WAV and MP3, with AAC and psp for specific hardware requirements, and you can get more information on
file formats
.
As with most media downloads, you can get download online music from so called ‘free’ sites which are peer-to-peer or file share programs. So, if you see an advert offering you music downloads free of charge, this will frequently be a p2p site. I have nothing against p2p sites: they are very useful and I belong to a number of them, though the major problem is one of ‘intellectual copyright’.
Most new music is protected by copyright and it is illegal to download it free. It is therefore up to you to make sure that permission has been given by the artist, or owner of the copyright, for the downloads. More on this on our
Legal Page
.
However, assuming you have ascertained that permission has been given, or a download license is available, it is legal to download online music.
They are not, however free, as you may know by now. You pay an annual or lifetime fee (I think the latter is best) for the software maintenance and support. However it is well worth the expenditure.
The sites we recommend are detailed on the menu buttons to the left. These are broken down into music types, so if you want AAC format music for your iPod, click on iTunes. You will then be given either options or our main recommendation, depending on our evaluation of the available sites. I have joined several sites in order to get first hand experience of how they work and how good they are. I have also read several reviews on each site allowing you to download online music in order to ensure that my opinion is backed up by other users.
Prices tend to be similar, though the best deals are those which offer a lifetime membership for under $40. You can download for the rest of your life, or the lifetime of the site, but be sure that your music downloads are legal. You can be prosecuted if you illegally download online music, though very few people are.
Music Streaming
File share programs allow you to download online music, but there also several which will provide you with free streaming music. We have a page specifically for this to the left. It’s a great way to listen to selected tracks, or listen to a sample, as you can do in some record shops, prior to purchase.
These sites do not allow you to download music online, at least not without paying, but I use them a lot. You can buy them from about $1 or 80P, but unless you want current chart stuff covered by copyright you may be best to join a file share group if you want to download online music over a period of time.
