I will start by saying that you cannot record streaming video free - you can't record it at all! This is due to the way streaming video is transitted and received.

There are two methods of streaming movies. The first is a system whereby you download a movie and watch while the download proceeds. Once the download is complete it is removed from your hard drive. Hence the impossibility to record streaming video free or paid.

The most common method is HTTP, but since it was not designed to handle streaming video or movies, the quality is not perfect. The problem with RTSP is that the packets of data which make up the movie have to reach your computer in the right order.

The way the internet works is that the data packets which make up a file are passed through the internet via a series of computers. The packets can take different routes according to traffic density but this does not matter with an ordinary file since they are arranged into the correct order once they reach your hard drive. With RTSP, this does not happen, since the packets do not reach your hard drive: they go straight to the video playback software.

Therefore, while you are watching your streaming video, you could suddenly lose chunks of what you are watching, or it can suddenly become pixilated for a while.

This problem is improving as connection speeds are being increased, but it still means that you are either watching a streaming video either with a protocol not designed for it, or one which can break up at any time. Either way is not good.
