Streaming Music

Streaming music enables you to listen to it without copying it to your hard drive. You can also watch streaming videos as it is being downloaded to you. Your media player downloads the file in bite-sized pieces to a buffer. As the first piece plays, the media player replaces with it the next . Sometimes chunks disappear in streaming audio due to the way that the internet works.

In streaming music The blocks of information pass through the internet from computer to computer, some taking a shorter route and some a longer route according to traffic on the net. The various pieces of streaming music may not all arrive at the target computer in the right order, which is not important with normal files, since they rearrange themselves on the hard disk once all have been downloaded. However, with streaming audio, this can cause a problem, and now and again there may be a slight pause due to blocks of the streaming file being in the wring order, and hence missed out. However, this is not such a problem with audio as it can be with video.

At the moment there are several formats used for streaming audio over the web, the most widely used being RealAudio, streaming MP3, Windows Media, and Apple's QuickTime, plus , Macromedia's Flash and Director Shockwave. The newer ones include Beatnik’s RTMF (Rich Music Format) and RealMedia G2 with SMIL that synchronize events and sounds. RealMedia and RealAudio

The most widely used streaming media format is RealMedia. The is largely due to the fact that it was the first streaming technology on the market. However, RealNetwork have concentrated on user friendliness, support for Windows and Unix systems, and in providing a wide range of developer tools which has made it generally the first choice for those wishing to design a system based on multiple audio streams. Our streaming video page gives more information on how streaming works.

To hear streaming music try Download.com and click on the ‘Music’ tab. I recently listened to a fantastic track by Jenny Lewis, front woman of Rilo Kiley, singing a marvelous solo song. It takes a little while to start up, but well worth the wait. CNET also have free MP3 tracks you can download., and you can listen to sample of others prior to purchase.

Generally, streaming music cannot be recorded since it is not downloaded to your hard disk. However there is software available to enable you to do this.

Napster

It's starting to get a bit difficult to use P2P softare illegally, to download chart material that is covered by copyright. Well, not exactly difficult, since it's just as easy to download as any other track, but some are download-protected, and the music companies are starting to prosecute those who do so.

The number of prosecutions are miniscule in comparison to the membership of such sites, but it does happen.

If you want to avoid doing this, Napster offers excellent prices for its downloads, and is currently offering a 7-day free trial. Why not try it out? Here are the links for Napster USA and UK:
